Busy Boy

Isaac had quite a day today!  The windows crew returned to finish installing windows, so he got to watch them work while he ate his breakfast.  He got to have black beans, his new favorite, with lunch.

He is working on learning how to eat with a spoon, so he had a lot of fun making a GIANT mess:

Then this afternoon, we went to see Daddy at work for a little Halloween Spooktacular event at NI.  We had a great time, but, alas, I didn’t get many photos.  Here’s what we did instead:

These are the 2 photos I managed to snap:

House & Isaac Updates

Not much noticeably changed on the house on Friday, so I decided not to post an update.  In addition, Friday was the day I finally (nearly) cracked from all of this construction, so I thought a short hiatus might be a good idea.  The roofer kept climbing down and asking me questions I had no way of being able to answer…  Saturday, the roofer came and finished up both the “contract” work and a few extra repairs Todd authorized him to do.  The other crew were doing a lot of little finish work on the upstairs porch and it didn’t look all that exciting.  🙂  Today, however, they made progress even I can see.  They boxed in (with Hardie plank) a lot of the edges of the porch.  They did a LOT of caulking to seal things up.  They also started painting, which is very exciting.

Windows!

More windows!  The installer should be here tomorrow morning (and last Wednesday, last Friday, and this morning).  I blame the General Contractor’s scheduling, not the windows guy.  I will just be glad when they get them installed.

In Isaac news, Todd and I took him to the park on Sunday afternoon.  We ran into 2 families (who also didn’t come together) from National Instruments, a friend of mine from church, and a woman I used to go to music class with over the summer.  Rather impressive given the size of this fairly small park…

Self-feeding with yogurt:

First attempt at spaghetti (we usually have smaller noodles):

We like spaghetti!

I want to go in the attic to help Daddy rewire the ceiling fans!!!

Isaac has a bit of a cold today and has been coughing, so I bought him some Little Remedies Saf-T-Pops to try to soothe a sore throat.  He had fun making himself into a super-sticky mess!

Parks

We recently rediscovered parks, now that the weather has gotten much cooler.  I realized that I hadn’t posted many photos of Isaac growing up lately, so I’m posting a few pictures from our mommy outing a few weeks ago and then some from this Tuesday.

Isaac has become quite the little dare-devil and has a blast when we go to the park now.  Before summer weather made outings impossible, I tried multiple times to get Isaac to try a sliding board.  He was not much of a fan and would cry, even though I would hold him the whole way down.  We only tried it a few times because I didn’t want to traumatize him.  Apparently I didn’t.  Now, he not only enjoys going down the slides, but climbing back up them, as well.  🙂  Here he is going up a small slide from one section of the playscape to the next:

Before I made him sit on his bottom to come down the slide…  This is a smaller slide; only about 3 feet high. It is designed to go pretty slowly (like the one pictured above), so he’s tempted to just walk up and down it.

Sliding on his bottom:

Climbing up down the steps on the playscape:

Over the weekend, we went to a new park that my friend, I’ll call her “Mephanie” to protect her innocence, assured us was much safer than the other parks we’ve tried.  As you can see, Mephanie spoke too soon.  Isaac managed to land on a little rock (we think) and gave himself a nice knot on the side of his head.

As you can see, he’s really bothered by it:

He was actually perfectly fine after he cried for about 30 seconds, but several people have now asked me what happened to his head.  It doesn’t help that the night before, I’d managed to cut his chin with my thumb nail while trying to get him to sit down on the couch…  I am not going to win Mother of the Year, after all.  The park was otherwise lots of fun and I’m sure we will try it again soon, although Mommy will keep a better eye out for little rocks…

This week, the cooler temps necessitated much warmer clothing.  Isaac had a great time when we stopped at the park for a little playtime on Tuesday.  He discovered this set of “steps” to climb up to the big slide.  To give you a reference, the top of this thing is about 6′ high – it’s above my head:

Determining his next move:

Reached the top and headed down the sliding board!  FEARLESS!!!

Here are a few quick video clips of the boy on the move… They were taken on my phone, so they aren’t quite as good as the ones my camera takes.  I didn’t realize how windy it was, so you may wish to turn the sound “off” on your computer before watching.  Sorry…
Climbing like a little pro:

Going down the slide:

Priming, Ceilings, Roofing!

Wow!  I didn’t post for a few days, so I went back to check what had happened since my last update.  The answer:  a LOT!!  I will let the pictures do the talking…  Apparently they are more efficient than I am…

Roofers!!!  Oddly, I remember our house being re-roofed as a child and how abominably loud it seemed at the time.  With everything else we’ve had done to the house, it was quite peaceful to hear the constant rat-tat-tat-tat all day today as they installed the shingles…

You can see the new roof!  They still need to come back (tomorrow?) to finish up a few things, but the bulk of the work is already complete.

Windows are due to be installed on Friday.  Tomorrow, John is coming to assemble the shutters.  They have really gotten quite a bit of work done this week and we are happy about that.  After much ado, Todd and I finally selected colors to paint the siding and the trim.  We *think* we have found the color for the ceilings, but we haven’t gotten a sample yet to make sure it will look like we think it should.  Hopefully we will be finishing up just in time for Halloween!

Thursday/Early Friday Update

Quick update while the guys are on their lunch break and I can get to the computer with less noise.  They finished siding the master bedroom/closet side of the house yesterday.  The framing crew wrapped up.  The door to the porch from the master bedroom was installed.  The dumpster was also successfully picked up in the afternoon.

Siding – they have filled in the missing piece.  That was where the “scaffolding” was attached.  (It was a 2 x 6 suspended in a somewhat scary manner).

This morning, they put the other door in and started putting foam board up across the front of the house.  Hopefully they will finish siding today.

Siding Update

There isn’t much to report from the framing crew.  The house looks essentially (exactly) the same as it did in the last photos.  They are working on all of the tedious odds’n’ends that seem to take forever.  They should be done this week, though.  The exciting changes are on the back of the house.  They finished the vast majority of the siding along the back yesterday.  They, too, are working on some of the minor finishing touches across the house this morning before moving on to the sides of the house.  They are also trying to level out the roof over the back porch some.  It’s about 3 inches low at the edge.  The same crew should also be installing the doors onto the porch today.

The back of the house at the end of the day.  They got the siding all the way across the back and over the garage:

The trailer that was *supposed* to remove the dumpster yesterday.  The frame on the trailer broke.  Maybe the wood was wet from the rain?  Maybe the old siding weighed a lot?  I don’t know, but the dumpster is still here.  LOL

The mommies and our boys met at the park again yesterday.  The boys ran all over the place and we attempted to get a few pictures of them together.  As Stephanie pointed out, this was much easier when none of them could roll over or crawl.  🙂  Actually, it wasn’t all THAT easy before, but we like to pretend.

Last night, Isaac had some black beans for dinner.  He had to have a bath immediately afterward.  But he really enjoyed his food!

Isaac’s Appt & House Construction

Today, we will attempt to post in order.  Therefore, first up is Snips & Snails.  Here he is after eating a bunch of black beans from Chipotle and then rubbing his hands all through his hair:

Isaac had his 18-month appointment with his new doctor yesterday afternoon.  We met with the nurse practitioner, Linda, for this checkup.  Isaac weighs 21 pounds 5 ounces.  This means he has gained exactly one pound over the last 3 months.  Given the amount of food this boy consumes on a daily basis, I don’t quite understand how that’s possible, but he must be using the energy for something other than growing.  🙂  Perhaps he uses it for running, playing, chasing the dog…  He is now below the 5th percentile for weight and is at the 10th percentile for height.  I hope I haven’t done something wrong to stunt his growth and now he’s going to be a midget. ::sigh::  Now that he is able to tolerate some dairy, I have been giving him more goat’s milk and more yogurt, in the hopes that some additional protein will help him grow some more.  I didn’t mention that Todd and I both think he’s gained some weight just over the last few days (since we’ve been giving him yogurt and more goat’s milk).  She said not to worry that he isn’t speaking or signing much.  She was impressed by how well he responded when I asked him to climb down off the step he was climbing (under the table, which is why I wanted him to get down).  She said he clearly understands what I’m telling him, even if he isn’t saying much.
Here’s a short clip of the busy boy yesterday:

On the house (Hammer & Nails), lots of work got done yesterday.  It was pretty darn exciting!  The front porch is now sporting a new gable.  It looks so nice.  Kristin thought it would break up the long expanse of the house and it certainly does.  I love it.  Especially with the roof pitch being so slight, it makes it much more obvious that there is a roof all the way up there.  😉  They got the gable mostly framed yesterday and then started putting the plywood up.  We think today might actually be the last day that this crew is on-site.  I will miss them when they are gone – they have been really nice and have really buckled down since the debacle last Thursday.  The “new” foreman that Bob brought in appears to be a permanent addition and he’s really good.  He keeps the team focused and on-task.  He’s also a working supervisor, so he’s busy getting things done at the same time.

Lunch time:

New doors to give us access to the upstairs porch to be hung sometime this week:

End of day:

The back of the house is coming along, as well.  They got a LOT of siding put up yesterday!  It is really impressive to watch these guys when they are going.  John stopped by to check it out and make sure things were being done properly.  The foreman for the siding, Nicolas, told him that they’d finish putting siding up on the bottom half of the back yesterday.  John told him he’d buy him lunch if he actually succeeded.  They didn’t earn a free lunch, but they came awfully close.  I was impressed with what they got done.

The door Todd rehung for *several* hours on Sunday evening.  This leads to the laundry room.  He finished not a day too soon, since they hung all of the siding and framed around it the next afternoon.

MUCH more exciting Friday!

Well, after almost nothing was done yesterday, we got off to a much better start this morning.  THANK GOODNESS!  I was up from 2:00-4:00 this morning fretting over our exposed attic.  Todd left a voice message for John last night that we were concerned, but it was pretty late and John didn’t return the call.  This morning, Todd went out to talk to Bob directly about the work and how long it was taking.  Apparently, Bob hurt his back yesterday, and he wasn’t able to directly supervise his crew.  They obviously need constant supervision.  Bob was concerned about our exposed attic, as well.  This morning, he shifted the priorities so that they sealed up the attic some before doing anything else.  I am so relieved!!!  🙂  He also brought in another foreman to help while he’s gone (to the hospital?  to Lowe’s?  I am not sure where).  This guy is supposed to be the person who trained Bob.  He’s GREAT.  There is no way he’s going to let 5 drops of rain slow down the progress!  He has the guys working together and they are moving so fast it’s unbelievable!  If he’d been here the whole time, our framing job would already be finished (I think). They have easily gotten more done this morning in just a few hours than they have on any other single day of work.  I am thrilled.  I am now optimistic that they might really finish this job.

You may or may not be able to tell that this is far more plywood than was up yesterday.  Trust me, though, it is.

On the back of the house, we had an issue.  I ran out to do some errands.  When I got home 45 minutes later, the water to the house was turned off.  Oops!  The foreman for the siding crew took me out and showed me where they had punctured the hot water line coning out of the old water heater and running up the laundry room wall.  He is now gone to Home Depot to get something to fix it.  While I am obviously less than thrilled that the pipe has been broken and I don’t have running water in my house, I am ecstatic at the way the situation was handled.  The foreman showed me the puncture, apologized, and explained how they were going to fix it, and when.  HOLY COW!!!  If the people in my corporate job had worked that way, I might never have quit to stay home with Isaac!!!  I seriously almost hugged the man.  LOL

With all of the construction going on outside, Isaac got busy with the Legos and did some building of his own this afternoon.

Less Framing and Less Siding

Today, the framing crew left at 2:00 because they said it started to sprinkle.  I beg to differ, since I was standing outside at the time.  I was somewhat perturbed; Todd is downright annoyed.  Todd is probably going to talk to Bob, the framing leader, in the morning.  If he doesn’t have a chance to do it, I certainly will.  I also think we should talk to John, the general contractor, as well.  They literally placed 4 pieces of plywood today.  I think they are still going to finish this week, if they actually buckle down and try to do that.  Bob told John they’ll be done before the weekend.  I’m not holding my breath that they’ll be done tomorrow, though.  On the bright side, the nice thing about plywood (and drywall, for that matter) is that it comes in big enough sheets that you see progress pretty quickly.  They REALLY need to finish, though, because every forecast is predicting rain this weekend.

This was 1/4 of the work that got completed on the framing today…

The other side:

 Street-level view:

Looking up:

That’s the news for the front of the house.  On the *back* side of the house, a new crew arrived today to rip off the old siding.  These guys are fast.  I was impressed by how quickly the concrete team did their jobs and I think the siding guys will be the same way.  It’s amazing what a difference it makes when a crew really WANTS to work.  There is no slacking off in our backyard; I can tell you that for sure.  They arrived, got marching orders, and started in right away.  They’ve already removed half of the siding from the back of the house!  The other good news on this crew is that they will be the ones to put the roofing on, so once Bob’s group finally finishes, the roof should go on in no time flat.

Tomorrow, there should be someone arriving to frame out doors onto the porch and also to frame out the new window going into the laundry room.  I am UBER-excited about this!  How freakin’ cool to have new doors!!!  They will have blinds between the glass since they are going to be in the master bedroom and (soon-to-be) guest room.  🙂  I can’t wait to see them!

On to the “snips & snails” part of the blog:  I am apparently the non-cooking mother of our mommy group.  LOL  Yesterday, we took the boys to a park, which was great.  The boys had fun, the mommies sort-of got to chat, and Isaac slept well last night.  While we were there, one of the other mothers asked me what I feed Isaac as “quick” food.  I didn’t think anything of it until I was telling Todd about it last night.  He was laughing that people think I don’t cook…  🙂  I had to laugh because I really don’t cook (at least for Isaac) – I had some suggestions.  Isaac loves those little Dole fruit cups, the ones packed in “real juice.”

Peaches!

Pears!

Scheduling

I had an amusing exchange with John, our contractor, yesterday.  I have been asking him for a schedule since last week.  A written schedule.  He hasn’t responded to me, but has talked to Todd and given him some of our scheduling plans.  Tuesday night, I messaged him and said I’d like to have the details by the end of this week.  Here’s the response I got yesterday:

Hi Heather,
The schedule is as follows:
The guys will be out tomorrow to tear off the siding and install the foam board.  On Friday they will install the two doors upstairs and begin the siding installation. On Monday or Tuesday they will install the trim around the columns.  The windows won’t be here for another week and a half or so but they will be the last to install.
I have been in contact with Todd so he knows the schedule. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
John

What do you suppose the odds are that construction will be finished (except for the windows) by next Tuesday?  LOL  I really did have to laugh.

According to the web site for Texas Storm Chasers, this weekend is the best chance we’ll have of getting real rain for the first time this year.  This makes perfect sense because they ripped the roof off of our house yesterday.  Not just the roof, either, but also the plywood that the roof was attached to.  Our attic is completely exposed to the elements.  I would say our chances of rain have never been better!  LOL  We’ll just have to see what actually happens and cross that bridge if/when we come to it.  I doubt I can stop it from raining just by stressing myself out, so I won’t bother to do that!

New arrival today.  There is *no way* this thing is going to hold all of the scrap accumulating in our yard…

Looking the other way down the house:

Looking up into the rafters.  There is white plastic sheeting over the top, exposed portion of the attic.  It blew like crazy in the wind last night.  At the bottom of the photo, you can see our attic insulation, the roofing that did not have to be removed, and then the new rafters on top.

Now that is a shallow roof pitch!!

In other news, I have hopefully found a new pediatrician for Isaac.  I interviewed Dr. Kangos on Monday.  While he isn’t exactly warm & fuzzy, he respects that the parents are the primary caregivers…  This is comforting because I got a lot of lectures on how to properly parent from our previous pediatrician.  We have been unhappy with the previous doctor for some time, but I was reluctant to try to find a new doctor because it is such a hassle.  She really upset me several months ago, however, when I asked her not to do something and she said, “well, I’m going to do it anyway” and proceeded to do so.  That should have been when I left, but I am a chicken…  Anyway, his 18-month appointment is scheduled for Monday, so we’ll see how Dr. Kangos does with Isaac.

Isaac also successfully ate yogurt with no noticeable negative reactions.  This is good news because it means he is, hopefully, learning to process dairy properly.
